Way of Life is one of the oldest habit trackers around, made by Way of Life ApS since 2010. Its idea is simple: mark each habit green or red every day, keep your chains going, and watch the patterns appear over weeks and months. On the iPhone it’s rated 4.8 from more than 5,000 US ratings. Before you download it or pay for Premium, here’s what’s free, what Premium adds, and what to know if you’re on Android.
We read every fact below from Way of Life’s App Store and Google Play listings and its website on October 25, 2026. One of the alternatives at the end is ours, Habit Rewards; we’ve tried to describe the others fairly.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Is Way of Life free? | Yes, with a limited number of habits |
| What does Premium add? | Only unlimited habits; every other feature is in the free version |
| What does it cost? | The US App Store lists Premium at $4.99, $14.99 and $29.99, without plan lengths |
| Is it on Android? | Yes, but rated 3.6 there, and last updated in August 2025 |
| Can I move from Android to iPhone? | Not by yourself: the two apps’ data formats differ, and Way of Life offers to convert it for you |
What Way of Life does well
- Green, red, skip. Each day you mark a habit done or not, and “Skip” marks a day off so it doesn’t count against your stats.
- Chains to keep a streak going, and a scoreboard with weekly and monthly feedback.
- Charts: pie charts, bar graphs with trend lines, and frequency distribution.
- Notes, tags, reminders with flexible schedules and your own messages, widgets, Siri and Shortcuts.
- Private by design: a passcode or Face ID lock, backup to your own cloud storage, and export to CSV, Excel or JSON at any time.
- Themes (including a Retro C64 one) and a color-blind mode.
What’s free, and what Premium adds
Way of Life is unusually clear about this. Its App Store description says: “No maze of paywalls. Everything above is included. Premium simply unlocks unlimited habits.” So the free version has every feature, with a cap on how many habits you track, and Premium lifts the cap.
The US App Store lists Premium at $4.99, $14.99 and $29.99 without saying which is a subscription and which is a one-time purchase; the app’s Premium screen shows the options (how habit tracker prices compare).
Way of Life on Android
There is an Android app, “Way of Life: habit tracker”, with more than 500,000 downloads. But it’s rated 3.6 from about 1,350 Google Play reviews, against 4.8 on the App Store, and its Play listing was last updated on August 7, 2025, while the iPhone app was updated in October 2026. The two apps also store data in different formats: Way of Life’s support page says you can’t move your data between them yourself, though they offer to convert it by hand if you write to them.
Is Way of Life worth it?
Yes, if you’re on an iPhone, you like the simplest possible daily check-in, and you care about privacy and exporting your own data. Since Premium only adds habits, you can judge the whole app for free.
Look elsewhere if:
- you’re on Android, given the rating and the update gap;
- you switch between Android and iPhone;
- you want a reward, not only a green day and a chart.
Way of Life alternatives, by what you’re missing
| If you want… | Try |
|---|---|
| A real reward for each habit, on iPhone and Android | Habit Rewards (ours) |
| Four habits free, as a year-long grid | HabitKit |
| Everything free, as a role-playing game | Habitica |
| Free and open source on Android, with export | Loop Habit Tracker |
Habit Rewards (ours) pays you for your habits. Every habit earns coins by how hard it is (1, 4, 8 or 16), and you write your own reward list, like a coffee out, a new book or a lazy Sunday, each with a coin price. Check off a habit and the coins land straight away; claim a reward once your balance covers it. A Skip costs 10 coins and keeps your streak alive on a day off, and you can check off a day you forgot from the calendar. It’s on iPhone and Android, free for three habits and three rewards, with Pro by subscription or a lifetime purchase.
HabitKit shows each habit as a year-long grid of tiles. It’s on iPhone and Android, free for up to four habits, with Pro by subscription or a one-time purchase (HabitKit alternatives).
Habitica turns your habits, dailies and to-dos into a role-playing game, free on iPhone and Android (apps like Habitica).
Loop Habit Tracker is free and open source on Android, with no ads, no account and export to a spreadsheet. It isn’t on iPhone (what to use there instead).
