What is a winter arc?

A winter arc is a stretch of self-improvement through the colder months. The name comes from TikTok and borrows the idea of a character arc: you come out of winter a better version of yourself, instead of waiting for New Year's resolutions. Most people start on October 1 and finish on December 31, which is 92 days, about 13 weeks. Some run it for 90 days from whenever they start.

There's no official rulebook. A winter arc is a short list of daily habits you keep every day, tracked where you can see it.

Winter arc rules most people use

  1. Pick 3 to 5 daily habits and keep the same ones for the whole arc. More than five is how most arcs end in week two.
  2. Make each one checkable: "train 45 minutes", not "get fit"; "read 10 pages", not "read more".
  3. Track every day on paper or in an app, so the streak is in front of you.
  4. Set a bad-day minimum for each habit (a 10-minute walk instead of the full workout) so a bad day still counts.
  5. Never miss twice. One missed day is a blip; two in a row is how the old routine comes back.

Is it too late to start a winter arc?

No. The dates are a convention, not a rule. Start today and pick the length that suits you:

StartUntil December 3190 days
October 1, 202692 daysends December 29
October 20, 202673 daysends January 17, 2027
November 1, 202661 daysends January 29, 2027
December 1, 202631 daysends February 28, 2027

Starting in December? A 31-day arc is a good warm-up for January. The 30-day challenge tracker prints a dated month, and the New Year's resolution tracker takes it into 2027.

Winter arc habit ideas

AreaIdeas
BodyTrain 45 minutes 5 or 6 days a week, 10,000 steps, stretch 10 minutes, in bed by 11 pm
FoodDrink 2.5 litres of water, no fast food, no sugary drinks, cook dinner at home
MindRead 10 pages, journal for 5 minutes, meditate for 10 minutes, write three things you're grateful for
DisciplineWake up by 6:30, no phone for the first hour, no phone in bed, make your bed
SkillsStudy for an hour, 30 minutes on a side project, practise an instrument, 15 minutes of a language

Pick one or two from different areas rather than five from one. Need more? 100 habit tracker ideas has a reward value for each. If the workouts are the core of your arc, log them in the workout tracker; if mornings are, build the order with the routine checklist maker.

Why the weekly reward matters

Thirteen weeks is a long time to wait for the payoff, and the first results (more energy, a cleaner room, a few kilos) rarely show up before week three or four. A small reward at the end of every week you kept your habits gives you something to look forward to now. Pick rewards that don't undo the arc: a new book, a film, a massage, gear for the habit. Save something bigger for the last day. For ideas, see 70 ways to reward yourself.

Your winter arc on your phone

Paper works until you're away from it. In Habit Rewards, add each winter arc habit as a daily habit: every check-off earns coins, your streak shows how many days in a row you've kept up, and you spend the coins on rewards you price yourself. On a day you can't do a habit, a Skip costs 10 coins and keeps the streak alive. It's free on iPhone and Android for up to 3 habits.

FAQ

When does the winter arc end? Most people end it on December 31, so it hands over to New Year's goals. If you start late, 90 days is the other common length.

Winter arc vs 75 Hard? 75 Hard has fixed rules (two workouts, a gallon of water, a diet, 10 pages, a progress photo) and you restart at Day 1 if you miss anything. A winter arc has no fixed rules: you choose the habits. If you want the strict version, use the 75 Hard calculator; the 75 Soft tracker sits in between.

What if I miss a day? Mark it and do the habit the next day. Don't restart the arc. The streak tracker shows your longest run so far, which is a better thing to beat than a perfect record.

Can students do a winter arc? Yes. Swap a workout for a daily study block and add sleep. The guide to rewarding yourself for studying has a points system that fits.

Rather track it on your phone? In Habit Rewards every check-off earns coins, and you spend them on rewards you set yourself. Free on iPhone and Android for up to 3 habits.
