Atoms is the official app for Atomic Habits, made with James Clear’s content by Atomic Development Inc. If you’re deciding whether to download it, or whether to pay for Pro, these are the questions people ask first: what does it cost, what’s free, does it work on Android, and is it worth it.

We read every fact below from Atoms’ own App Store and Google Play listings, its website and its support FAQ on October 25, 2026. One of the alternatives at the end is ours, Habit Rewards; we’ve tried to describe the others fairly.

Question Short answer
Is Atoms free? Free to download, with a free version after the trial
What does Pro cost? US $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year (UK £4.99 / £39.99)
Does the trial charge you? No. Atoms says you go back to the free version unless you subscribe
Where does it run? iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android, and a web version
How is it rated? 4.8 from 10,756 US App Store ratings; 3.1 from 681 Google Play reviews

What Atoms does

Atoms is a habit tracker with short daily lessons from James Clear on top. Its approach follows the book:

  • Identity first. You build each habit from the kind of person you want to become, pick a size that suits you, and commit to a time and a place. The suggestions are optional; you can type your own.
  • One habit to start. You begin with a single habit. Its FAQ says one rep of your first habit unlocks the rest.
  • Logging is press-and-hold: the atom fills up and the habit is done for the day. In Compact View you tap a + instead.
  • Daily goals can be more than once a day, in times or another unit such as steps.
  • Reminders at an exact time, or several through the day.
  • Past days: you can log the last 7 days from Home, and older days from a habit’s history.
  • Lessons: a daily lesson from James Clear.
  • Progress insights and milestones, home-screen widgets and an Apple Watch app.

How much Atoms costs

Atoms is free to download. Its paid tier is Atoms Pro: $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year on the US App Store, £4.99 or £39.99 in the UK. Google Play lists in-app purchases from $4.99 to $39.99 per item. For comparison, the median yearly price among the top 50 habit trackers on the US App Store is $29.99 (our price survey).

The trial is unusual, in a good way. Most apps turn a free trial into a paid plan unless you cancel. Atoms’ support FAQ says its trial “does not require any subscription commitment”: when it ends you become a free user, unless you chose to subscribe during the trial.

What exactly does Pro add? Atoms doesn’t say on its website, its store listings or its support FAQ, so we won’t guess. The paywall inside the app shows it. Because the trial doesn’t charge you, the trial is a safe way to find out.

Atoms on Android

Atoms is on Google Play with more than 100,000 downloads, but the two versions are rated very differently: 4.8 on the US App Store (4.7 in the UK and Canada, 4.8 in Australia) and 3.1 on Google Play. The Android listing was updated on October 20, 2026. If you’re on Android, read the most recent Play reviews before paying for a year.

Is Atoms worth it?

Yes, if you’ve read Atomic Habits and want its ideas in your pocket: identity-based habits, starting small, a daily lesson. The free version after the trial means there’s little to lose by trying it.

Maybe not, if:

  • you’re on Android and the 3.1 rating worries you;
  • you want a reward, not only a ticked box. The book’s fourth law is “make it satisfying”, and its rule is that what is immediately rewarded is repeated. Atoms makes logging feel good; it doesn’t give you anything to spend;
  • you’d rather pay once than subscribe.

Atoms alternatives, by what you’re missing

If you want… Try
A real reward for each habit Habit Rewards (ours)
A year-long grid, and a pay-once option HabitKit
Free and open source on Android Loop Habit Tracker
A plan for when and where Structured

Habit Rewards (ours) turns the fourth law into a system. Every habit pays coins by how hard it is (1, 4, 8 or 16). You write your own reward list, like a coffee out, a new book or a lazy Sunday, and give each reward a coin price. Check off the workout and the coins land straight away; claim the reward once your balance covers it. For “never miss twice” there’s a Skip: 10 coins keep your streak alive on a day off. It’s on iPhone and Android, free for three habits and three rewards, with Pro for more. There are no lessons from the book; for those, Atoms is the one.

A reward list in Habit Rewards: each reward has a coin price

HabitKit shows each habit as a year-long grid of tiles that fills in day by day. It’s on iPhone and Android, free for up to four habits, with Pro by subscription or a one-time purchase (HabitKit alternatives).

Loop Habit Tracker is free and open source on Android, with no ads and no account. It isn’t on iPhone (what to use there instead).

Structured puts your habits on a visual timeline of your day, which is the book’s “implementation intention”: I will do it at this time, in this place.
