What goes on a self-care checklist

Self-care is mostly maintenance: the small, unexciting things that keep you running, like eating a real meal, getting outside, sleeping on time, answering the message you've been avoiding. A checklist helps because those are exactly the things that slip first when life gets busy, and a list on the fridge remembers them for you.

The builder above groups ideas into six areas. You don't need something from every area every day. A good list covers most of them across a week.

How to make one you'll actually use

  1. Keep it short. Five to seven daily items is plenty. A list of 20 turns into a list of things you didn't do.
  2. Make each item small and specific. "Walk 10 minutes after lunch" gets done; "exercise more" doesn't.
  3. Put bigger things on the weekly list. Fresh sheets, a call with family, an hour on a hobby: once a week is realistic, every day isn't.
  4. Star your bare minimum. Pick the three items you'll do even on your worst day, like water, a meal and bed on time. On a bad day, those three count as a full day.
  5. Review it on Sunday. Cross off what you never do, and add what you missed.

Turn the checklist into a habit that pays

A paper list works until the week you forget to print it. In Habit Rewards, each item becomes a habit that pays coins, on the days you pick or a set number of times a week, and you spend the coins on rewards you price yourself. Put the daily ones in Morning and Evening groups and set a reminder for the one you always forget. It's free on iPhone and Android for up to 3 habits: a good fit for your three starred items.

A checklist is for everyday upkeep, not a substitute for help. If you're struggling most days, talk to a doctor or someone you trust. In the US you can call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) any time; in the UK, Samaritans are on 116 123.
