A habit tracker that pays you. Each habit is worth coins, every day you do it the coins add up, and you spend them on rewards you put a price on yourself. One file with all twelve months of 2027, for Excel or Google Sheets. Free, no sign-up, no email.

Google Sheets: in Google Drive, click New → File upload, pick the file, then open it with Google Sheets. Excel: just open it. Want a different year? Change it on the "Start here" tab and every month updates its dates.

The first week of February in the spreadsheet (the month tabs run 1 to 31). Type an x and the box turns green; the coins, totals and balance fill in by themselves.

What's in the spreadsheet

  • Start here: the year, your coin balance and the coins earned each month.
  • Habits: up to 12 habits and how many coins each one pays. Rename a habit here and it changes on every month.
  • Jan to Dec: one tab per month with a box for every day, weekday letters and greyed-out days that don't exist (no February 30). Each row counts its days and coins.
  • Rewards: up to 30 rewards with a price in coins. Write the date when you take one and its price comes off your balance.

How to use it

  1. On the Habits tab, list 3 to 5 habits. Stuck? Pick from these 100 habit tracker ideas.
  2. Give each habit a coin value: 5 for easy ones, 10 for normal, 15 to 20 for the ones you keep putting off. Harder habits should pay more.
  3. On the Rewards tab, list things you'd enjoy and price them (see below).
  4. Each day, type x in the box for every habit you did. Do it the same day: a tracker you fill in from memory on Sunday stops meaning much.
  5. When your balance covers a reward, take it, guilt-free, and write the date next to it.

How to price your rewards

Add up what a good day pays. With the four example habits that's 40 coins. Then price rewards in good days, not in money:

Reward sizeCosts aboutExample (40 coins a day)
Small treat1 to 2 good daysFancy coffee: 60
Medium5 good daysMovie night: 200
Big2 to 4 weeksDinner out: 800
Goal reward2 to 3 monthsNew running shoes: 3,000

Keep one or two small rewards on the list at all times so there's always something within a few days' reach. More ideas: 70 ways to reward yourself and a dopamine menu for the free ones. Why coins work better than "I'll treat myself if I'm good": a token economy for adults.

Questions

Does it work in Google Sheets?

Yes. Upload the .xlsx to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets. The formulas and the green boxes carry over. Type x rather than adding checkboxes: an empty checkbox still counts as filled.

Can I use it for 2026 or 2028?

Yes. Change the year on the "Start here" tab and the dates and weekdays on all twelve months follow.

Do my coins carry over between months?

Yes. The balance is everything you've earned this year minus everything you've spent, so a reward can take two months to save for.

I'd rather print it.

Use the printable monthly habit tracker, the yearly habit tracker (one page per habit) or the 30-day challenge tracker. All of them are on the free tools page.

Prefer it on your phone?

Habit Rewards is the app version of this spreadsheet, for iPhone and Android. You tick off habits, each one pays coins, and you spend the coins on rewards you set yourself. It also keeps your streaks and sends reminders, so there's no file to open.
