The 365 day savings challenge is one box a day for a year. Each box has a number from 1 to 365. Every day you pick a box you haven’t done, save that amount, and colour it in. Fill all 365 and you’ve saved $66,795, or $667.95 if you do it in pennies.
It works because you can pick the order. Payday gets a big number, the week before rent gets a 3. And there’s something to colour every single day, which turns saving into a habit instead of a once-a-month decision.

How much do you save?
| Version | Each box is | Total for the year | About per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 365 day penny challenge | 1¢ to $3.65 | $667.95 | $56 |
| 365 day dime version | 10¢ to $36.50 | $6,679.50 | $557 |
| 365 day dollar challenge | $1 to $365 | $66,795 | $5,566 |
| 100 envelope challenge | $1 to $100 | $5,050 | (over 100 days) |
Prefer one deposit a week? The 52 week savings challenge printable comes in $1,378, $6,890 and $13,780 sizes. The dollar version averages $183 a day, which is out of reach for most budgets. The penny version averages $1.83 a day and is the one most people finish. If you want something in between, treat each number as dimes.
Months aren’t equal: if you go in order, January saves $4.96 in pennies and December $108.50. Going in any order evens it out, and it’s the main reason to use a chart you colour in rather than a calendar.
How to do the 365 day penny challenge
- Pick your unit: pennies, dimes or dollars. Write it at the top.
- Choose where the money goes: a jar, or better, a separate savings account. Move it the same day, so it doesn’t drift back into spending.
- Each day, pick any box you haven’t done, save that amount and colour it in. Low-money days get low numbers.
- Missed a day? Colour two tomorrow. No restarting.
- Write your milestone rewards before you start in the table at the bottom.
Starting on January 1 is classic, but any day works: the chart doesn’t have dates on it.
Free 100 envelope challenge printable
The 100 envelope challenge is the same idea, shorter: 100 envelopes numbered 1 to 100, one a day, $5,050 at the end. Many people do two a day and finish in 50 days.
Download the 100 envelope challenge PDF → or open it as an image. Use it with real envelopes as the tracker, or skip the envelopes and transfer the amount to savings. Want it smaller? Halve every number for a $2,525 version.
Milestone rewards that don’t spend the savings
A year is a long time to go without a finish line, so the chart has five. One rule: the reward has to cost much less than what you saved, ideally nothing at all. Spending half the jar on a celebration isn’t a reward, it’s a refund.
| Boxes filled | Reward ideas |
|---|---|
| 50 | A coffee out, a lie-in, a library haul |
| 100 | A favourite dinner at home, a cinema trip, an afternoon off |
| 200 | A book you’ve wanted, a massage, a day trip with a packed lunch |
| 300 | A class you’ve wanted to try, a good pair of shoes |
| 365 | A small, fixed share of the total (say 5%), the rest stays saved |

Make saving a daily habit
The chart tracks the money. What keeps it going is the daily habit of doing it. Habit Rewards can hold that habit: add “Save today’s box” as a daily habit, and each day you do it pays coins you spend on rewards you set yourself, with your streak counted for you. Add habits for the spending you want less of, like takeaway or impulse buys, alongside it.
It’s free for three habits and three rewards on iPhone and Android.
FAQ
How much is the 365 day savings challenge total? 1 + 2 + … + 365 = 66,795. In dollars that’s $66,795; as the penny challenge it’s $667.95; with dimes, $6,679.50.
How does the 365 day penny challenge work? On each day of the year you save a number of pennies from 1 to 365, using each number once. You can go in order (1¢ on day 1, $3.65 on day 365) or pick any number each day and colour it in on the chart. By the end you’ve saved $667.95.
Do I have to go in order? No. Any order adds up to the same total. Picking small numbers on tight days and big ones on payday is what makes the challenge easier to finish.
