Productive is one of the longest-running habit trackers on the App Store: rated 4.6 from about 91,000 US ratings, on iPhone and Android, and published by Bending Spoons. You build habits for parts of the day, get streaks (“chains”) and perfect days, and can follow guided programs and challenges.
It is also, by a distance, the habit tracker people complain about most. When we read the latest 500 US App Store reviews of 11 well-known habit apps this month, Productive had the most 1★ and 2★ reviews among them (252), mostly about the price, a paywall before you can try anything, and being charged after a trial. Here’s what’s free, what Premium costs, and four alternatives. One of them is ours, Habit Rewards; we’ve tried to describe the others fairly.
Productive free vs Premium
Productive’s own listing says Premium adds:
- an unlimited number of habits (so the free version has a cap)
- challenges and full-text articles
- improved reminders for individual habits, and location-based reminders
- stats for each habit and week-by-week trends
The free version keeps the basics: habits by time of day, streaks and reminders.
How much is Productive Premium?
On the US App Store, Productive lists Premium 1 Year at $19.99, $39.99, $59.99 and $79.99, Premium 1 Month at $10.99, a weekly bundle at $5.99 and a $3.99 upgrade (we read the list on October 24, 2026). Which price you’re offered depends on the paywall you’re shown. Twelve months on the monthly plan come to $131.88. The typical habit app is about $30 a year (prices compared).
The iPhone app was last updated in March 2026.
| If you want… | Try |
|---|---|
| A clean free tracker, and the option to pay once | HabitKit |
| To pay once and never subscribe (iPhone) | Streaks |
| Everything free, as a game | Habitica |
| A reward for every habit you keep | Habit Rewards |
1. HabitKit: free to start, pay once if you like it
HabitKit shows each habit as a year-long grid of tiles that fills in day by day. It handles goals like “3 times a week”, works offline with no account and runs on iPhone and Android. The free version covers up to four habits with streaks, statistics, notes and reminders. Pro adds unlimited habits, widgets and backups, and comes as a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase ($14.99 to $29.99 listed in the US).
Good for: Productive users who mostly looked at their chains and want that without a subscription.
Less good if: you want guided programs or challenges (HabitKit alternatives).
2. Streaks: $5.99, once
Streaks is the classic pay-once tracker on Apple devices: up to 24 tasks, each a round button you tap when done, with Apple Watch and Mac apps, Health app integration, reminders and widgets. No subscription and no ads. It’s rated 4.8 from more than 27,000 US ratings.
Good for: iPhone users who are done with subscriptions.
Less good if: you use Android, or want to try before paying; there’s no free version (Streaks alternatives).
3. Habitica: everything free
Habitica turns habits, dailies and to-dos into a role-playing game: you earn gold and experience, buy gear and lose health when you miss a daily, and you can join a party with friends to fight bosses. The whole app is free on iPhone, Android and the web; the subscription is optional.
Good for: people who liked Productive’s challenges and want them with friends, for free.
Less good if: you want a calm, tidy list. Habitica is busy (apps like Habitica).
4. Habit Rewards: a reward for every habit you keep
This one’s ours. It covers the daily part of Productive: habits with reminders, a streak and a done/skipped/failed calendar for each one, and home-screen widgets. Then it gives you something to look forward to: every habit pays coins by how hard it is (1, 4, 8 or 16), and you spend them on rewards you write yourself, like a coffee out, a new book or an evening of gaming. On a day you can’t manage, a Skip costs 10 coins and keeps the streak alive.
It’s on iPhone and Android and free for three habits and three rewards (one-off tasks don’t count toward the three); widgets are free too. Pro is a subscription (most people see $29.99 a year with a 7-day free trial) or a lifetime purchase, and there’s no weekly plan.
Good for: people whose chains stopped motivating them after a few weeks, and anyone who already treats themselves and would rather earn it.
Less good if: you want programs, articles or location-based reminders. We don’t have them; Productive does.
Which one?
If you want Productive’s tidy tracker without the subscription, HabitKit is the closest, and Streaks if you’re on iPhone and happy to pay $5.99 once. If you want everything free, Habitica. And if the tracker was fine but you kept drifting off after a few weeks, put a reward at the end of each habit with Habit Rewards.
