Most habit tracker apps are subscriptions now. Across the top 50 habit trackers in the US App Store, the typical yearly plan is about $30, and monthly plans cost even more over a year (all the prices). If you’d rather not add another one, there are three ways out: an app that’s free, an app you buy once, or a free app with a lifetime unlock.
We read every price below from the US App Store on October 20, 2026. One of the apps is ours, Habit Rewards; we’re not affiliated with the others. Prices change, so check the listing before you buy.
| App | Where | How you avoid a subscription | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loop Habit Tracker | Android | Free and open source, nothing to buy | $0 |
| Habitica | iPhone, Android, web | The whole app is free; the subscription is optional | $0 |
| Streaks | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac | Paid app, no subscription | $5.99 once |
| Habit Tracker (Inner Grow) | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch | Free version, or lifetime | $19.99 lifetime |
| HabitKit | iPhone, Android | Free for 4 habits, or lifetime Pro | $14.99–$29.99 lifetime |
| Grit | iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac | Free version, or lifetime | $19.99–$44.99 lifetime |
| Habitify | iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Android, web | Free for 3 habits, or lifetime Pro | $119.99 lifetime in the app |
| Habit Rewards (ours) | iPhone, Android | Free for 3 habits and 3 rewards, or lifetime Pro on iPhone | $34.99–$99.99 lifetime |
A range like “$14.99–$29.99” means the App Store lists several prices for the same plan: developers test prices and run offers, and which one you see can depend on the screen you’re on.
Free: Loop and Habitica
Loop Habit Tracker is the cleanest answer on Android: free, open source, no in-app purchases and no habit limit, with one-tap widgets and a habit “strength” score that forgives a single missed day. It isn’t on iPhone (the closest iPhone picks).
Habitica is free on every platform, as a role-playing game: tasks earn gold and experience, missed dailies cost health, and you can team up with friends. In Habitica’s words, the subscription is there if you’d like to support them. It’s busy, and a missed day hurts, so it suits people who like stakes (apps like Habitica).
Pay once: Streaks
Streaks is a paid app at $5.99 with no subscription, on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac. It tracks up to 24 tasks a day, ticks some off from the Health app, and is an Apple Design Award winner. It’s the cheapest good tracker over a few years; the catch is that you pay before you’ve tried it (is Streaks worth it?).
Lifetime: free to start, unlock once
Most of the apps in the table are free to download with a lifetime option next to the subscriptions. Across the top 50, lifetime costs a median of 1.7 times the highest yearly price, so:
- It pays off if you’re still using the app after about two years.
- It doesn’t if you stop after a few weeks, which happens to plenty of people with habit apps. Use the free version for a month first.
- Check what the free version covers. HabitKit is free for four habits, Habitify for three, Habit Rewards for three habits and three rewards.
Two of the bigger ones: Habit Tracker by Inner Grow (rated 4.8 from about 148,000 US ratings) has a $19.99 lifetime, and Habitify lists Pro lifetime at $119.99 in the app (Habitify alternatives).
Habit Rewards: free for three habits, lifetime if you want more
This one’s ours. Each habit pays coins by how hard it is (1, 4, 8 or 16), and you spend them on rewards you write and price yourself, like a coffee out or an evening of gaming. There are streaks, a done/skipped/failed calendar and home-screen widgets, and on a day you can’t manage a habit, 10 coins buy a Skip so the streak survives.
The free version covers three habits and three rewards (one-off tasks don’t count toward the three), and the widgets are free. On iPhone, Pro comes as a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase.
No app at all
A habit tracker doesn’t have to be an app. Our free tools run in the browser with no sign-up: a printable habit tracker for the month, a habit tracker spreadsheet and a streak tracker.
