Habitica and Habitify sound alike and do the same job, tracking habits, in opposite ways. Habitica is a retro RPG: your habits power a character, and skipping them hurts it. Habitify is a clean, quiet tracker with charts, reminders and automatic logging from your health apps, and no game at all.
The choice usually comes down to one thing: do you want your habit app to be fun, or invisible?
The short answer
| Habitica | Habitify | |
|---|---|---|
| The idea | A pixel-art RPG: gold, experience, gear, pets | A minimal tracker: streaks, charts, a progress calendar |
| What you track | Habits, Dailies and To Do’s | Habits on daily, weekly or custom schedules, with notes, mood and a timer |
| Missing a day | A missed Daily costs Health; in a boss quest it hurts your party | Mark a habit done, skipped or missed, or pause it when life changes |
| Logs itself | You check things off | With Pro: Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit, Strava, Screen Time, RescueTime |
| With friends | Parties, boss quests, Challenges, Guilds | Friendly challenges |
| Price (US App Store) | Free; optional subscription from $4.99 a month or $47.99 a year | Free to start; Plus $29.99 a year; Pro $49.99 a year or $8.99 a month; lifetime $59.99–$119.99 |
| Where | iPhone, Android and the web | iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Android |
| US App Store rating | 4.3★ from about 3,600 ratings | 4.6★ from about 7,100 ratings |
Habitica: when you want a game
You create an avatar and add tasks in three columns: Habits you tap whenever they happen, Dailies that repeat on a schedule, and To Do’s you do once. Checking things off earns gold and experience; you level up, collect gear and pets, and can spend gold on custom rewards you write yourself. A Daily left unchecked costs Health when your day resets.
The best part is the party. Team up with friends and you fight bosses together, and your missed Dailies hurt everyone, so people show up for each other. It’s open source, and all of it can be used for free.
Pick Habitica if you like games, a bit of pressure helps, or you have friends who’d play.
Watch out for setup: most of the pain comes from goals filed as Dailies before they’re habits. Here’s which column each task belongs in, and 100 task ideas already sorted.
Habitify: when you want it out of the way
Habitify is built to take as little of your attention as possible. You add habits with a schedule and reminders, then tick them off or let them log themselves: with Pro, it can read Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit, Strava, Screen Time and RescueTime, so a walk or a run can count without opening the app. Streaks, a progress calendar and charts show how you’re doing, and a habit can be marked skipped or paused instead of failed. It also works with Siri and App Intents, and offers an API and MCP for logging habits through other tools.
Pick Habitify if you like data, use Apple devices (it runs on the Mac and Apple Watch too), or want habits like steps and sleep to log themselves.
Watch out for the free version’s limits: unlimited habits and smart reminders come with Plus, automatic tracking with Pro. What it all costs next to other apps: habit tracker app prices compared. More on Habitify itself: our Habitify review.
How to choose in one question
When you skip a habit, what would make you go back: a game you don’t want to lose, or a clean chart you don’t want to break?
- The game: Habitica.
- The chart: Habitify.
A third option: if what you want is rewards
Some people find that the gold was the only part of Habitica that worked, and that a clean tracker like Habitify has nothing to work toward. That gap is what our app, Habit Rewards, is for: each habit pays 1, 4, 8 or 16 coins depending on how hard it is, and you spend the coins on real rewards you write and price yourself, like a coffee out, a new book or a gaming evening. No character to lose; a missed day costs nothing. Streaks, reminders and home-screen widgets are there too.
It’s free for three habits and three rewards on iPhone and Android. Staying with Habitica? Make its Rewards column work with how to price Habitica custom rewards. Comparing more apps: Habitica vs Finch and ten apps like Habitica.
