Habitica and Finch are the two best-known ways to turn habits into a game, and they’re built on opposite ideas. Habitica is a retro RPG: your tasks power a character, and skipping them hurts it. Finch is a self-care pet: small check-ins give a little bird energy, and nothing bad happens if you have an off day.
Neither is better. They suit different people, and most people can tell which one they are in a minute.
The short answer
| Habitica | Finch | |
|---|---|---|
| The game | A pixel-art RPG character with gear, pets and levels | A small bird you look after, who goes on adventures |
| What you track | Habits, Dailies and To Do’s: anything, with schedules | Goals plus self-care: mood check-ins, journaling, breathing, quizzes |
| Doing it | Gold, experience and items | Energy for your bird, plus in-app rewards |
| Missing a day | A missed Daily costs Health; in a boss quest it hurts your party too | Nothing bad happens |
| With friends | Parties, boss quests, Challenges, Guilds | Built around you and your bird |
| Price | Free; optional subscription from $4.99 a month or $47.99 a year (US App Store) | Free to start; optional Finch Plus |
| Where | iPhone, Android and the web | iPhone and Android |
| US App Store | 4.3★, about 3,600 ratings, rated 12+ | 4.9★, about 767,000 ratings, rated 4+ |
Habitica: when you want stakes
You create an avatar, then add your tasks in three columns. Habits are things you tap whenever they happen, Dailies repeat on a schedule, and To Do’s are one-offs. Checking things off earns gold and experience; you level up, collect gear and pets, and spend gold in a shop or on custom rewards you write yourself. A Daily you leave unchecked costs Health when your day resets.
Its biggest strength is social. Join a party with friends and you take on quests together; during a boss quest, everyone’s missed Dailies hurt the whole party, so people show up for each other. Challenges give you shared task lists, and Guilds are interest groups.
Habitica is open source and run by a small team. All of it can be used for free; the subscription adds extras.
Pick Habitica if a bit of pressure helps, you like RPGs, or you have friends who’d play along.
Watch out for a bad week turning into a dead character and a reason to quit. Most of that comes from setup: goals filed as Dailies before they’re habits. Here’s which column each task belongs in.
Finch: when you want kindness
Finch starts with a quick mood check in the morning. Small self-care steps (a goal, a journaling prompt, a breathing exercise) give your bird energy, and it goes off on adventures and comes back in the evening with stories. Along the way you get mood trends, guided journaling, breathing sessions and short quizzes on things like anxiety, and insights that combine them.
Nothing in Finch punishes you. A day you do nothing is just a day; your bird doesn’t get hurt. That’s the whole design, and it’s why so many people who gave up on stricter apps stick with it.
Pick Finch if you’re mostly working on self-care, mood or anxiety, or streak pressure has made you quit apps before.
Watch out for goals that need numbers or a schedule: Finch tracks them gently, not in detail. If that’s what you need, see apps like Finch that lean more on habits.
How to choose in one question
On a bad day, what gets you to do the thing: not wanting to lose, or someone being kind to you?
- Not wanting to lose (Health, a streak, your party’s trust): Habitica.
- Kindness and a small win: Finch.
Plenty of people use both: Finch for mood and self-care, Habitica for chores and work. They don’t overlap much.
A third option: if it’s the rewards you like
Some people find that the part of both apps that works is getting something for showing up, but what they really want is a real-life treat, not gold for an avatar or an outfit for a bird. That’s the idea behind our app, Habit Rewards: each habit pays 1, 4, 8 or 16 coins depending on how hard it is, and you spend the coins on rewards you write and price yourself, like a coffee out, a new book or a gaming evening. No character to lose, no pet to look after. A missed day costs nothing, and a Skip, bought with coins, keeps a streak alive on a day you can’t.
It’s free for three habits and three rewards on iPhone and Android. Still using Habitica? Make its Rewards column work with how to price Habitica custom rewards. Want more options?
