Habitica pays you Gold for every task you check off. You can spend it in the Market on equipment, potions and the Enchanted Armoire, or on custom rewards: treats you write yourself and give a gold price.
Most players use the game shop and ignore custom rewards. That’s why gold stops mattering after the first few weeks: once you’ve bought the gear, there’s nothing left you want. Custom rewards fix that, but only if the prices make sense. Here is how much gold your tasks actually pay, how to price rewards against that, and 60 ideas to fill the column.
How much gold does a task pay?
Habitica is open source, so we can read the exact rule. Each check-off pays:
gold = task value × difficulty × Perception bonus, rounded up to a whole number.
- Difficulty multiplies the payout: Trivial × 0.1, Easy × 1, Medium × 1.5, Hard × 2.
- Task value starts at 1 for a new (yellow) task. Tasks you keep doing turn blue and pay a little less, down to about 0.6×. Tasks you’ve neglected turn red and pay more, up to about 3.4×. That’s why an old red To Do is your best-paying task.
- Perception adds 2% per point, from your class, level and gear.
- Streaks: a Daily on a streak pays at least 1 extra gold (1% per streak day once that’s worth more, so a 100-day streak doubles it).
- Critical hits sometimes multiply a payout.
Since August 2026 Habitica rounds payouts up to whole gold (it used to show decimals). So for a fresh task and no Perception, one check-off pays roughly:
| Difficulty | New task | Daily on a streak | Very red task |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trivial | 1 | 2 | 1 |
| Easy | 1 | 2 | 4 |
| Medium | 2 | 3 | 6 |
| Hard | 2 | 3 | 7 |
Rounding up means Trivial tasks now pay the same 1 gold as Easy ones, and any Perception at all pushes an Easy task to 2. If you want gold to track effort, set difficulty honestly: Hard for the task you dread, Easy for the one you’d do anyway.
What does a normal day earn? Say four Medium Dailies on streaks (3 each), two Medium To Do’s (2 each) and three taps on an Easy Habit (1 each): about 19 gold. Count your own the easy way: note your gold in the morning, then again the next morning, before buying anything.
Estimate your daily gold (new tasks; your real numbers vary with task colour and critical hits)
What the game shop costs
For scale, here’s what Habitica’s own Rewards column charges:
- Health Potion: 25 gold, restores 15 Health.
- Enchanted Armoire: 100 gold, a random piece of special equipment, Experience or food.
- Equipment for your class: priced per piece, and pricier as you level up.
Your custom rewards compete with these. If a real treat costs the same as an Armoire pull, ask yourself which one you’d rather have. If it’s the Armoire, your treat is priced too high or isn’t much of a treat.
How to price custom rewards
Add a reward in the Rewards column (on the phone, the Rewards tab), then open it to set the cost. A new custom reward costs 10 gold until you change it. The cost is any whole number of gold, and you can buy the same reward as many times as you can afford it. Habitica won’t let you buy a reward you can’t pay for.
The rule that works best: price each reward in days of effort, using your own daily gold.
- Small treats (a coffee out, an episode, a bath): about one day’s gold. With 19 a day, 15–25 gold.
- Medium (a takeaway, a new book, a cinema trip): about a week. 100–150 gold.
- Big (new shoes, a concert ticket, a day trip): about a month. 400–700 gold.
- Huge (a gadget, a weekend away): two to three months. 1,200–2,000 gold.
Three things keep the system honest:
- Only take the treat after you buy it. Gold you spend should be the permission. If you have the coffee first and “pay later”, the reward stops rewarding anything.
- Keep at least one reward you can afford today. If everything costs a month, the column is a wish list, not a reason to check things off this evening.
- Re-price after a month. If gold piles up, prices are too low or the rewards aren’t wanted. If you never buy anything, they’re too high.

Why custom rewards fail in Habitica (and how to fix it)
- The game shop wins. Gear changes how your avatar looks and makes you stronger, so gold drifts there. Fix: once you have the gear you want, stop shopping in the Market and leave only custom rewards worth buying.
- Rewards are vague. “Treat myself” never gets bought. Write the exact thing: “Pad thai from the place on 5th”.
- Gold buys everything. If the Armoire costs 100 and your daily gold is 40, prices you set a year ago are now pocket change. Re-price when your Perception or task list changes.
- Rewards undo the habit. A cake for a week of healthy eating, or a day off from the gym as a gym reward, pulls against the habit. Reward yourself with something on a different axis.
If the rewards are the part you like
Some people find the custom rewards are the only part of Habitica that keeps them going, and the avatar, Health and party are noise. That’s the idea behind our app, Habit Rewards: no character and no damage, just coins and the rewards you set.
| Habitica | Habit Rewards |
|---|---|
| Gold per task from value × difficulty, rounded | A fixed 1, 4, 8 or 16 coins per check-off, set by how hard the habit is, so prices stay stable |
| Custom rewards beside the game shop | Your reward list is the only shop: real treats you write and price in coins |
| Missed Dailies cost Health | A missed day costs nothing; a Skip, bought with coins, keeps a streak alive on a day you can’t |
| To Do’s | Tasks: one-offs that pay coins too |
It’s free for three habits and three rewards on iPhone and Android. If you’d rather keep the game, the full comparison is in Habitica vs Habit Rewards, new players can start with Habits vs Dailies vs To Do’s, and a ready-made board is in 100 Habitica task ideas.
FAQ
How much gold do you get per task in Habitica? About 1 gold for a new Easy task, 2 for Medium or Hard, more for red tasks you’ve neglected (up to about 3.4×), at least 1 extra for a Daily on a streak, and 2% more per point of Perception. Payouts are rounded up to whole gold.
How do custom rewards work in Habitica? You add a reward to the Rewards column and set its cost in gold. Clicking it spends the gold; it stays in the column so you can buy it again. You can’t buy a reward you can’t afford.
How much should a Habitica custom reward cost? Price it in days of effort: a small treat costs about one day’s gold, a medium one about a week’s, a big one about a month’s. Check your daily gold first (compare your balance from one morning to the next).
What are good Habitica reward ideas? Concrete ones you actually want: a coffee out, an episode, a takeaway, a book, a concert ticket. Avoid rewards that undo the habit (cake for a diet streak). The list above has 60 with prices.
Why do I have so much gold in Habitica with nothing to buy? Once you own the gear you want, the Market has little left. Add custom rewards priced against your daily gold, and raise prices as your gold income grows.
