Habit Rabbit and Finch both give you a small animal to look after, and both grow it when you look after yourself. They feel alike for the first five minutes. After that they’re quite different apps: Habit Rabbit is a habit tracker with a pet, and Finch is a self-care app with a pet.
Here’s how each one works, what it costs, and who it suits, from their App Store and Google Play listings as of October 24, 2026. At the end there’s a third option, ours, for when a pet stops being enough. We’re not affiliated with Habit Rabbit or Finch.

Habit Rabbit: a pet for your habits
Habit Rabbit is made by SuperByte, the developer of Study Bunny. You add habits, and every one you complete makes your rabbit’s home a little cleaner and brighter. You earn carrots for doing habits and spend them on clothes for the rabbit and furniture for its house; you can also buy more carrots. The rabbit cheers you on when you check something off, asks how you’re feeling, offers quotes and productivity tips and suggests which habit to work on next, and there’s a leaderboard where you can see other people’s rabbits.
On Android it has more than 500,000 downloads and shows ads. Its last update on both stores was in November 2025.
Good for: people who want a habit tracker first, and a cute reason to open it.
Less good if: you want journaling and mental-health tools, or an app that’s updated often.
Finch: a pet for your self-care
Finch is a self-care app built around a small bird. Each day you set little goals (drink water, step outside, reply to that email), and finishing them gives your bird energy to go exploring; in the evening it comes back with a story. Around that sit a mood tracker with trends, guided journaling prompts, breathing exercises, short mental-health quizzes, a sleep wind-down and insights that pull it all together. It’s known for being gentle on bad days. Finch is made by Finch Care, a public benefit corporation, and has more than 10 million downloads on Android.
Finch is free to download, and Finch Plus is an optional subscription. The App Store lists Finch Plus at several prices between $5.99 and $69.99, and the paywall in the app shows which one applies to you.
Good for: anyone who wants to feel better day to day, with habits as one part of that.
Less good if: you mostly want to track habits and see your streaks and stats. Finch’s goals are lightweight on purpose (apps like Finch).
Which one?
Ask why you’d open the app. If it’s to get your habits done and the rabbit is the bonus, Habit Rabbit. If it’s to check in with yourself, calm down or journal, Finch. Plenty of people use Finch for self-care and a separate tracker for habits.
A third option: rewards that aren’t for the pet
Both apps pay you in something for the pet: carrots for the rabbit’s house, energy and rewards for the bird. That works while the pet is new. Some people find that after a few weeks, a nicer burrow isn’t enough to get them to the gym.
Habit Rewards, our app, pays you in coins for your own life instead. Every habit pays coins by how hard it is (1, 4, 8 or 16), and you spend them on rewards you write and price yourself: a coffee out, a new book, an evening of gaming, a lazy Sunday. Each habit has a streak and a calendar, there are reminders and home-screen widgets, an optional daily mood check-in, and on a day you can’t manage, a Skip costs 10 coins and keeps the streak alive. There’s no pet.
It’s on iPhone and Android, free for three habits and three rewards (one-off tasks don’t count toward the three), with a Pro subscription for more.
Good for: people who liked earning carrots or energy and would rather earn something real.
Less good if: the pet is the point. Then stay with Habit Rabbit or Finch.
