Study Bunny: Focus Timer has a simple deal. You time your studying, you earn coins, and you spend them on items and music in its store. Hit pause when your focus slips and it offers some motivational advice. It also has a to-do list, flashcards and a study tracker. It’s free, on iPhone and Android, with a 4.7 rating from more than 21,000 US ratings.
People look for something else for a few reasons. Some want an app that actually blocks distractions. Some want to study with friends. Some notice that the iPhone app hasn’t been updated since December 2024 (the Android one since December 2025). And some realize that what keeps them going isn’t a hat for a bunny but a treat for themselves.
So here are five apps, picked by what you want from Study Bunny. One of them is ours, Habit Rewards; we’ve tried to describe the others fairly.
| If you want… | Try |
|---|---|
| The same cute-companion deal, newer | Focus Friend |
| Your phone locked while you work | Forest |
| To focus together with friends | Flora |
| To study next to other people | Focustown |
| Rewards you can use in real life | Habit Rewards |
1. Focus Friend: the closest swap
Focus Friend, by Hank Green, works the way Study Bunny does. You start a timer and a little Bean keeps you company. Finish the session and the Bean gives you prizes to decorate its room. Stop the timer early and the Bean is really sad. There are break timers if you like the Pomodoro method, a Deep Focus Mode that locks distracting apps, and a Live Activity so you can see the timer on your lock screen. It came out in 2025 and has a 4.8 rating from about 8,800 US ratings. It’s on iPhone and Android.
Good for: people who love Study Bunny’s companion and want an app that’s actively updated.
Less good if: you need flashcards or a detailed study log in the same app.
2. Forest: put the phone down
Forest is the classic. You start a session and a tree grows; leave the app early and it withers. Finished sessions build up a forest and unlock new tree species and soundscapes. On iOS 16 or later you can make Allow Lists that block distracting apps during a session. It also has a partnership with Trees for the Future, and its community has planted more than two million real trees. It’s on iPhone and Android.
Good for: people whose real problem is picking up the phone.
Less good if: you want a cute character to look after.
3. Flora: focus with friends
Flora also grows trees while you stay off your phone, and it blocks distracting apps while a tree grows. Its twist is friends. You can plant together, and if someone gives up early, everyone sees whose tree died. It also has a to-do list with reminders, and you can tag each tree with a to-do to see where your time went. It’s free, with a 4.8 rating from more than 80,000 US ratings, on iPhone and Android.
Good for: study groups and friends who keep each other honest.
Less good if: you study alone and don’t need the social part.
4. Focustown: study next to real people
Focustown puts you in a cozy low-poly cafe or library alongside real people who are studying at the same moment. Focus sessions earn coins that you spend on accessories for your character, and you can start sessions with your own friends. It’s newer (2026), on iPhone, Android and Steam.
Good for: people who study better at a library than at home.
Less good if: you want a quiet app with nobody else in it.
5. Habit Rewards: rewards you choose
This one’s ours. Study Bunny pays you in coins for its in-app store; Habit Rewards pays you in coins for your own store. You write a list of rewards, like a bubble tea, a new game, an episode of your show or a Saturday off, and give each one a coin price. You add “Study” as a daily habit, and it pays coins by how hard it is (1, 4, 8 or 16). One-off work like “finish the chemistry problem set” goes in as a task and pays coins once. When your balance covers a reward, you claim it.
If you need a day off, a Skip costs 10 coins and keeps your streak alive. It’s on iPhone and Android, free for three habits, with a Pro subscription for more.
Good for: students who already treat themselves and want the treat to be earned. Our guide to rewarding yourself for studying shows the system on paper first.
Less good if: you want a timer. Habit Rewards doesn’t have one. Plenty of people time the session in Forest or Focus Friend and then check the habit off in Habit Rewards.
How to pick
Think about why you opened Study Bunny in the first place. If it was the bunny, try Focus Friend. If your phone is the problem, Forest. If you work better when friends are watching, Flora. If you miss the library, Focustown. And if the coins only start to matter once they buy something real, give your rewards a price: that’s what Habit Rewards is for. You can use a timer and a habit tracker side by side.
