Daylio is one of the best-known mood diaries: you pick a mood, tap the activities you did, and over time its stats and calendar show which activities go with your better days. It’s rated 4.8 from about 62,000 US App Store ratings, has more than 10 million downloads on Android, and you can keep a journal in it without typing a word.
People look for an alternative for a few reasons: they’d rather not pay for Premium (the US App Store lists Daylio Premium at prices from $4.99 to $59.99; we read it on October 24, 2026), they want something even quicker, they’re tracking a health condition, or they’ve noticed the mood log alone doesn’t change their days. Here’s a pick for each. One of them is ours, Habit Rewards; we’ve tried to describe the others fairly.
| If you want… | Try |
|---|---|
| Completely free, from a research nonprofit | How We Feel |
| Even faster, cuter, with a year in pixels | DailyBean |
| To link mood with symptoms, sleep and medication | Bearable |
| Habits that earn rewards, with a daily mood check-in | Habit Rewards |
1. How We Feel: free, and built with Yale
How We Feel was created with Yale University’s Center for Emotional Intelligence and is run by a nonprofit funded by donations, so there’s nothing to buy. Instead of a five-face scale, it helps you find the exact word for how you feel, then suggests short video strategies (some take as little as a minute) to change your thinking, move your body or calm down. It can pull sleep, exercise and other trends from Apple Health to spot patterns, and a friends feature lets you share how you feel with people you trust. Your data stays on your device unless you opt in to share it anonymously for research. It’s rated 4.9 from about 30,000 US ratings, on iPhone and Android.
Good for: anyone who wants a free mood tracker that also helps you do something about the mood.
Less good if: you want Daylio’s activity stats and custom icons.
2. DailyBean: even less typing
DailyBean is the closest in spirit to Daylio, only cuter. Pick a mood “bean”, tap icons for what you did, ate or felt, add a photo and a line if you like, and watch your year fill in as a grid of colourful pixels. The blocks are customisable and new themes come out every month. It’s rated 4.8 from about 71,000 US ratings, on iPhone and Android, and its pass is listed at $19.99 to $39.99 a year or $3.99 to $7.99 a month.
Good for: people who loved Daylio’s no-writing entries and want them prettier.
Less good if: the price is why you’re leaving; it’s a similar kind of subscription.
3. Bearable: mood plus health
Bearable is a symptom tracker first. You log mood, energy, stress, sleep and anxiety alongside symptoms, pain, migraine, medication and what’s going on in your life, and it shows which factors move together, so you can see what makes things better or worse. It’s used by people managing chronic conditions, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD and more. It’s rated 4.8 from about 6,500 US ratings, on iPhone and Android, with Premium listed from $4.49 to $49.99.
Good for: anyone tracking mood because of a health condition, or bringing data to a doctor.
Less good if: you want a quick, light diary. Bearable asks for more.
4. Habit Rewards: habits that pay, with a mood check-in
This one’s ours. A lot of people use Daylio’s activities as a habit tracker: did I exercise, read, sleep early? Habit Rewards is built for that half, and it gives you a reason to keep going. Every habit pays coins by how hard it is (1, 4, 8 or 16), and you spend them on rewards you write and price yourself, like a coffee out, a new book or an evening of gaming. Each habit has a streak and a done/skipped/failed calendar, there are reminders and home-screen widgets, and there’s an optional daily mood check-in on the Home screen (turn on Show Mood Tracker under Profile → Appearance). On a day you can’t manage, a Skip costs 10 coins and keeps the streak alive.
It’s on iPhone and Android, free for three habits and three rewards (one-off tasks don’t count toward the three); the mood check-in and widgets are free too. Pro removes the limits.
Good for: people who track moods and activities and want the good activities to happen more often.
Less good if: you want mood statistics and correlations. Our mood check-in is simple; Daylio, DailyBean and Bearable go much deeper.
Which one?
If price is the reason, How We Feel is free and genuinely good. If you want Daylio, only faster and cuter, DailyBean. If your mood is tied to your health, Bearable. And if you’ve learned from Daylio which activities make your days better and now want to do them more, put a reward on each one with Habit Rewards. A mood tracker and a habit app also work well side by side.
