HabitNow is one of the most popular habit trackers on Android, with more than 5 million installs and a 4.7 rating on Google Play. If you’ve switched to an iPhone, or want to use it on an iPad, you won’t find it in the App Store: HabitNow is Android only, and there’s no iOS version.
What people like about HabitNow is that it’s more than a habit tracker. It puts habits, recurring tasks and one-off to-dos in one list, with a calendar, reminders, timers, streaks and charts. So the question on an iPhone is which part of that you used most. Here are three apps that cover it. One of them is ours, Habit Rewards; we’ve tried to describe the others fairly.
| If you mostly used HabitNow for… | Try |
|---|---|
| To-dos, a calendar and a focus timer, with habits on the side | TickTick |
| Habits and to-dos together, plus a reason to keep going | Habit Rewards |
| Habits only, with a clear picture of your progress | HabitKit |
All three also run on Android, so you can keep using the same app if someone in your house stays on Android. Before you switch, make a backup in HabitNow, in case you go back.
1. TickTick: the all-in-one
TickTick is a to-do list first, and a good one: lists, recurring tasks, several reminders per task, flexible calendar views and sync across devices. It also has a habit tracker (set a goal and check it off each day) and a Pomodoro timer for focus sessions, which covers HabitNow’s timer. It’s rated 4.9 from more than 46,000 US App Store ratings and is free to use, with a Premium subscription for advanced features. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android and the web.
Good for: people who used HabitNow mostly as a planner and to-do list.
Less good if: habits were the main thing for you: in TickTick they’re one feature among many.
2. Habit Rewards: habits, to-dos and a reward
This one’s ours. Like HabitNow, it keeps habits and to-dos in one place: daily, weekly and monthly habits, habits you do several times a day, habits you want to quit, and one-off tasks, each with its own reminder, plus home-screen widgets and a streak calendar for every habit.
What’s different is the reason to keep going. Every habit and task pays coins by how hard it is (1, 4, 8 or 16). You write your own list of rewards, like a coffee out, a new game or a lazy Sunday, each with a coin price, and claim one when your balance covers it. Miss a day for a good reason and you can spend 10 coins on a Skip that keeps your streak alive.
It’s on iPhone and Android, free for three habits (tasks don’t count toward that), with a Pro subscription for more.
Good for: people who liked HabitNow’s habits-plus-to-dos list and want more pull to finish it than a streak.
Less good if: you relied on HabitNow’s timers or full calendar view: Habit Rewards has neither.
3. HabitKit: habits only, beautifully
HabitKit shows each habit as a year-long grid of tiles that fills in day by day. It supports goals like “3 times a week” or “20 times a month”, lets you add a note to any day, has home-screen widgets, and works offline without an account. It’s free for up to four habits, with Pro as a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase. It’s on iPhone and Android.
Good for: people who opened HabitNow mainly for the streaks and stats.
Less good if: you want your to-do list in the same app.
Which one?
If HabitNow was your planner, go with TickTick. If you used it to see your habits add up, HabitKit’s grid is a lovely way to do that. And if you liked having habits and to-dos in one list but the streaks stopped motivating you after a few weeks, try putting a reward at the end of them: that’s what Habit Rewards is for.
Whichever you choose, start small: three habits and today’s to-dos. Need ideas? Here are 100 habit tracker ideas, each with a suggested coin value. Coming from another Android app? See Loop Habit Tracker for iPhone. The whole field, grouped by what motivates you: the best habit tracker apps.
Habit Rewards is free on iPhone and Android. HabitNow is a product of its own developer; we’re not affiliated with it or with the other apps mentioned.
