A weight loss reward chart turns a long goal into steps you can see. Each step gets a reward you picked in advance, so the next one is never more than a couple of weeks away.
Most charts only reward the scale. This one rewards two things: the milestones, when you reach them, and the habits you do every week, which you control even in a week when the scale doesn’t move.

How to set it up
- Write your start and goal weight. Then split the gap into steps. Every 5 lb (or 2 kg) works for most people. With a big goal, use every 10 lb and keep the last steps smaller.
- Fill the target weight for each step, counting down from your start weight.
- Write a reward next to every step before you begin. Small at first, bigger as you go, the best one at the goal. Deciding now stops you from inventing a reward on a good day or skipping one on a bad one.
- Pick three weekly habits you control: a 20-minute walk, water with every meal, a vegetable at dinner, no snacks after 9 pm. Decide how many ticks out of 21 earn the week’s reward. 15 is a fair start.
- Put it where you’ll see it. The fridge door is the classic spot for a reason.
A gradual pace is the one that tends to last: the CDC notes that people who lose about 1 to 2 pounds a week are more likely to keep it off. At that pace a 5 lb step comes every three to five weeks, which is why the weekly habit rewards matter: they fill the gaps.
Reward ideas for each milestone
Non-food rewards work best, because the reward shouldn’t pull against the goal. A ladder that grows with you:
| Milestone | Reward ideas |
|---|---|
| Steps 1–2 | A new water bottle, a film night with no chores, a magazine or e-book, a long bath, new socks for walking |
| Steps 3–4 | Wireless earbuds, a massage, a new workout top, a plant, a class you’ve wanted to try |
| Steps 5–6 | New running shoes, a haircut somewhere nice, a concert ticket, a day trip, a fitness tracker band |
| Step 7 | A weekend away, a piece of clothing in your goal size, a bigger hobby purchase |
| Goal | The thing you’d never buy yourself: a trip, a bike, a photo shoot, a full new outfit |
Weekly habit rewards should be small and quick: an hour of a game, a coffee out, a lie-in, a new podcast episode saved for the walk. Want more? We keep 50 non-food rewards for weight loss, sorted by size.
Rules that keep the chart honest
- Rewards only when the step is reached, never in advance.
- Weigh at the same time, for example once a week on the same morning. Daily weight jumps up and down and makes the chart feel random.
- A step reached stays reached. If the scale goes back up a little, you don’t hand the reward back. Keep doing the weekly habits; the next step will come.
- The weekly reward is about the habits, not the scale. A week with 18 of 21 ticks earns it even if your weight didn’t change.
Weight loss challenge prizes (for a group)
Running a challenge at work or with friends? Two things make it fair and kind:
- Judge by percentage lost, not pounds. A bigger starting weight loses pounds faster; percentage keeps it fair.
- Give prizes for habits too: most weeks with all workouts done, most steps, longest streak. People who lose slowly still have something to win.
Prize ideas: a gift card for a sports shop, a fitness class pass, a smart water bottle, a massage voucher, a day off chores at home, or a shared pot everyone pays into at the start.
Prefer it on your phone?
Habit Rewards works like this chart in your pocket: each habit pays coins when you check it off (1, 4, 8 or 16 by difficulty), and you spend them on rewards you price yourself. A milestone can be a reward that costs more coins, so it takes a few weeks of habits to afford. It keeps the streak and the balance for you. It’s free for three habits and three rewards on iPhone and Android.

FAQ
How often should you reward yourself when losing weight? Once a week for the habits, and at each milestone (every 5 lb or 2 kg) for the scale. That way there’s always a reward within a week or two.
What are good rewards for weight loss that aren’t food? Things that support the new habits (shoes, workout clothes, a class), experiences (a concert, a day trip, a massage) and small comforts (a bath, a film night, an hour of a game). See the 50 non-food rewards list.
What if I stop losing weight for a few weeks? Keep ticking the weekly habits and taking those rewards. Plateaus are common; the chart is there to keep the habits going until the scale moves again.
Is the chart free? Yes. Download the PDF and print as many as you like.
