The 52 week savings challenge is the classic way to save without thinking too hard about it: put away $1 in week 1, $2 in week 2, and $1 more every week until week 52. By the end of the year you’ve saved $1,378. Scale it up and the same chart gets you $6,890 or $13,780.
The amounts start tiny on purpose. By the time the deposits get bigger, saving every week is already a habit.

Pick the size that fits your budget. Each is one page (US Letter, prints on A4) with every week’s deposit, the running total, a date column and a tick box:
- $1 a week more: $1,378 → (week 1 $1, week 52 $52)
- $5 a week more: $6,890 → (week 1 $5, week 52 $260)
- $10 a week more: $13,780 → (week 1 $10, week 52 $520)
Weeks 13, 26, 39 and 52 are gold: those are your reward weeks, with lines at the bottom to write each reward before you start.
How much you save
| Plan | Week 1 | Week 52 | Week 13 total | Week 26 total | Week 52 total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $1 steps | $1 | $52 | $91 | $351 | $1,378 |
| $5 steps | $5 | $260 | $455 | $1,755 | $6,890 |
| $10 steps | $10 | $520 | $910 | $3,510 | $13,780 |
The $3,000, $5,000 and $10,000 versions
If you have a round goal, a flat amount every week is simpler than a growing one:
| Goal | Every week (52) | Every two weeks (26) |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $19.23 | $38.46 |
| $3,000 | $57.69 | $115.38 |
| $5,000 | $96.15 | $192.31 |
| $10,000 | $192.31 | $384.62 |
Round up to the next dollar and you’ll finish a little early. Paid every two weeks? The biweekly column lines up with your paydays.
Reverse it if December is tight
The classic version puts the biggest deposits in November and December, right when the holidays cost the most. The reverse challenge starts at week 52’s amount and counts down: $52 in week 1, $1 in the last week. Same total, and the hard weeks come while your motivation is fresh. Use the same chart and read it bottom to top.
How to make it stick
- Automate what you can. A recurring transfer on payday is the easiest deposit you’ll ever make. Tick the box when it lands.
- Keep the money somewhere separate, a savings account or a jar you don’t walk past every day.
- Missed a week? Double up next week. Don’t restart.
- Mark each week. Ticking the box is part of the reward. Keep the chart where you’ll see it.
- Take the reward weeks seriously. Write them before you start, and make them cheap.
Rewards that don’t spend the savings
| Week | Reward ideas |
|---|---|
| 13 | A coffee out, a library haul, a lie-in |
| 26 | A favourite dinner at home, a cinema trip, a free museum day |
| 39 | A book you’ve wanted, a class, a day trip with a packed lunch |
| 52 | A small fixed share of the total (say 5%); the rest stays saved |

Track the habit in an app
Habit Rewards can hold the weekly habit next to your daily ones. Add “Make this week’s deposit” as a habit that repeats weekly, and each week you do it pays coins you spend on rewards you set yourself. Habits for the spending you want less of (takeaway, impulse buys) can sit alongside it.
It’s free for three habits and three rewards on iPhone and Android.
FAQ
How much do you save with the 52 week money challenge? $1,378 if you add $1 a week ($1 in week 1, $52 in week 52). With $5 steps it’s $6,890, with $10 steps $13,780.
How do I save $5,000 in 52 weeks? Put away $96.15 a week (round up to $97 to finish early), or $192.31 every two weeks if you’re paid biweekly.
How do I save $10,000 in 52 weeks? $192.31 a week or $384.62 every two weeks. The $10-step challenge gets you to $13,780, but its last deposits are $500+ a week.
Can I start the 52 week challenge any time? Yes. The chart has a date column rather than fixed dates: write the date of week 1 and go from there.
What is the reverse 52 week challenge? The same amounts in the opposite order: the biggest deposit in week 1 and the smallest at the end, so the expensive holiday weeks get the smallest deposits.
