Fifty thousand words in thirty days. NaNoWriMo, the nonprofit that ran National Novel Writing Month since 1999, closed in 2025. The challenge didn’t go with it: writers still start a draft on November 1, alone or with friends, and writing sites run their own versions. ProWritingAid’s is called Novel November, with the same 50,000-word goal.
The old site’s word count graph went too. Our free word count tracker covers that: enter your goal and start date, log each day’s words, and it shows whether you’re ahead of pace, the words a day you need from here, your finish date at the current rate and your milestone rewards. It has a printable 30-day log and a CSV for Google Sheets, and it saves in your browser (no sign-up).
How many words a day for November 2026?
1,667 words a day finishes 50,000 in 30 days (50,000 ÷ 30 = 1,666.7). November 2026 starts on a Sunday and has 21 weekdays, so writing only Monday to Friday means 2,381 a day. Smaller goals are fine; plenty of people pick their own:
| Goal for November | Words a day (all 30 days) | Words a day (weekdays only, 21 days) |
|---|---|---|
| 50,000 | 1,667 | 2,381 |
| 30,000 | 1,000 | 1,429 |
| 25,000 | 834 | 1,191 |
| 10,000 | 334 | 477 |
One missed day costs about 60 extra words a day for the rest of the month. Falling 3,000 behind by day 12 means about 1,830 a day instead of 1,667: annoying, not fatal.
A week-by-week plan
| Week | Dates (2026) | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sun Nov 1 – Sat Nov 7 | Motivation is highest. Aim for 2,000 a day and bank the extra. |
| 2 | Sun Nov 8 – Sat Nov 14 | The dip: most drafts stall around days 8–15, when the opening idea runs out. Lower the bar to “500 words, then decide”, and keep the streak. |
| 3 | Sun Nov 15 – Sat Nov 21 | Halfway (25,000) on the 15th. Get a day or two ahead before the holiday. |
| 4 | Sun Nov 22 – Sat Nov 28 | US Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov 26. If you’ll lose that day or the weekend after it, write the words on the 23rd–25th. |
| 5 | Sun Nov 29 – Mon Nov 30 | Two days. Finish, then stop counting. |
Three rules that matter more than the plan:
- Same time every day. Attach the session to something you already do: after the morning coffee, after you clear the dinner table.
- Never miss twice. One empty day is a slightly bigger target. Two in a row is how challenges end.
- Don’t edit in November. Leave notes like [fix later] and keep going. Drafting and editing are different jobs.
Rewards for writing milestones
A month is a long time to wait for “I finished”. Small rewards at each milestone keep the count moving. Set them before November 1 (the tracker has fields for your 25%, 50% and 100% rewards) and only take them once you’ve reached them:
- Every day you hit your target: an episode of a show, a fancy tea, 20 minutes of reading for fun
- 12,500 words (25%): a coffee out, a new pen or notebook
- 25,000 words (halfway): takeaway from your favourite place, a cinema trip
- 50,000 words: the big one: a weekend away, a new keyboard, a proper night out
Avoid rewards that undo the work (a week off writing as the halfway prize), and keep one you can earn this week. More ideas by cost: ways to reward yourself.
Track the habit, not just the count
The word count is the scoreboard; the habit is sitting down every day. In our app, Habit Rewards, add a daily habit “Write today’s words” and set it to Hard: each check-off pays 8 coins, and you spend coins on rewards you write and price yourself. Thirty days pays 240 coins, so price the 50,000-word reward at around 200. If Thanksgiving wipes out a day, a Skip (10 coins) keeps the streak alive. Free for three habits and three rewards on iPhone and Android.

FAQ
Is NaNoWriMo still happening in 2026? The NaNoWriMo nonprofit closed in 2025, so there’s no official site, forums or word count validation. The challenge carries on: writers set the same 50,000-word November goal on their own, with a writing group, or through other sites’ versions such as ProWritingAid’s Novel November.
What replaced NaNoWriMo? No single site. ProWritingAid’s Novel November keeps the 50,000-word goal; many writers just run the challenge themselves with a word count tracker and a group chat.
How many words a day do you need for NaNoWriMo? 1,667 words a day for 30 days makes 50,000. If you only write on weekdays in November 2026 (21 days), it’s 2,381.
Is there a NaNoWriMo tracker for Google Sheets or to print? Yes: the free word count tracker prints a 30-day log and downloads a CSV (day, date, words, running total, pace) that opens in Google Sheets or Excel.
When does NaNoWriMo 2026 start? The traditional dates are November 1 to November 30. In 2026 that’s Sunday to Monday, 30 days.
