If you’ve kept a Duolingo streak going for months, you already know the pull: you open the app at 11:40 pm because you don’t want to see that number go back to zero. It’s natural to want the same thing for exercise, reading or going to bed on time.

No app does all of what Duolingo does for habits in general, and the owl isn’t the magic part anyway. The pull comes from a handful of mechanics you can copy. Here’s what they are, which habit apps use which ones, and how to set up your own.

What makes Duolingo’s streak work

Duolingo has written about this on its own blog. Learners who reach a 7-day streak are 3.6 times more likely to finish their course, and when Duolingo doubled the number of Streak Freezes a learner could hold, daily active learners went up. Five things do the work:

  1. A tiny daily goal. One lesson takes a few minutes. The streak counts showing up, not doing a lot.
  2. A visible streak. The number is on screen every time you open the app, so breaking it has a cost you can see.
  3. A safety net that costs something. A Streak Freeze covers a day you miss. You buy it in advance with gems, so it’s there when life happens, but not free enough to use every day.
  4. A currency you earn. Lessons pay gems and XP, and gems buy things in the shop. Progress turns into something you hold.
  5. A nudge and a celebration. A reminder when your streak is at risk, and an animation when you’ve done today’s lesson.

A plain checklist has only the second one. That’s why it’s easy to stop after two weeks.

Four habit apps with the Duolingo pieces

App Streaks Safety net Currency What the currency buys
Habit Rewards Per habit Skip, bought with 10 coins Coins Real-life rewards you set yourself
Finch Yes Streaks can be paused Rainbow stones Clothes and furniture for your pet bird
Habitica Per daily None: missed dailies cost health Gold and XP Avatar gear, plus rewards you add
Streaks Per task Tasks can be paused None Nothing: the streak is the reward

1. Habit Rewards: streaks plus a reward shop

This one’s ours. Every habit has its own streak and a streak calendar. Each check-off pays coins by how hard the habit is (1, 4, 8 or 16), and you spend them on a list of rewards you write yourself, each with a coin price: a coffee out, a new game, a lazy Sunday. That’s the Duolingo shop, except what you buy is real.

The Streak Freeze has a direct match: on a day you can’t make it, spend 10 coins on a Skip and the streak survives. It costs coins you earned, so it doesn’t turn into a habit of its own. You also get a short celebration when you finish a habit, reminders per habit, home-screen widgets, one-off tasks that pay coins too, and a Quit mode for habits you want to break.

It’s on iPhone and Android, free for three habits, with a Pro subscription for more.

Good for: people who want Duolingo’s streak plus a reward they actually care about.

Less good if: you want XP, levels or leagues: there aren’t any.

2. Finch: the friendly one

Finch gives you a small bird to look after. Finishing your goals gives it energy and earns rainbow stones, which buy clothes and furniture for it. Streaks reward you at milestones, and you can pause one. It’s gentle by design and leans on self-care: mood check-ins, reflection, breathing exercises. Free to start, with an optional Finch Plus subscription.

Good for: people who liked Duolingo’s character and would rather be encouraged than pushed.

Less good if: you want to track specific habits closely or plan your own rewards.

3. Habitica: the RPG

Habitica turns habits, dailies and to-dos into a role-playing game. Done tasks give experience and gold, gold buys gear or rewards you add, and you level up. There’s no safety net: a missed daily costs your character health, and in a party on a boss quest it hurts your friends too. That’s the closest thing to Duolingo’s leagues, social pressure included.

Good for: people who liked Duolingo’s XP and leaderboards and want friends to keep them honest.

Less good if: losing health for a bad day makes you want to quit (more on that in Habitica alternatives).

4. Streaks: the streak and nothing else

Streaks (iPhone and Apple Watch, a $5.99 one-time purchase) does one thing well: track up to 24 tasks and build a run of consecutive days. It reads Apple Health, so a walk or a glass of water can check itself off, and you can pause a task. There’s no currency and no shop.

Good for: people for whom the streak number alone is enough.

Less good if: you’re on Android, or the number stops working on you after a while.

How to set up a Duolingo-style habit system

Whatever app you use, or paper, copy the mechanics rather than the look:

  1. Make the daily goal Duolingo-sized. “Read 10 pages”, not “read more”. “Put on running shoes and walk out the door”, not “run 5 km”. You can do more; the streak only asks for the minimum.
  2. Start with one to three habits. Duolingo is one streak. Five new streaks on day one is five chances to feel behind.
  3. Pay yourself for every check-off. Points, coins or marbles in a jar. Harder habits pay more. The point is that today’s effort leaves something behind even before the streak gets long.
  4. Buy your safety net in advance. Decide what a skip costs (in Habit Rewards it’s 10 coins: three days of three easy habits) and keep one in reserve. One planned skip a week is fine. Two misses in a row is the line: never miss twice.
  5. Give the currency something to buy. Duolingo’s gems buy power-ups. Yours can buy a takeout night or a guilt-free gaming evening. Price small treats at about one good day and big ones at about a month. Need ideas? See 70 ways to reward yourself.
  6. Set one reminder per habit at the time you’d actually do it, and one late-evening check for anything still open.

If you’d rather try it on paper first, our free streak tracker counts current and longest streaks for one habit, and the reward tracker runs the coins-and-rewards loop in your browser.

FAQ

Is there a Duolingo for habits? Not from Duolingo: its streaks only count lessons. Apps like Habit Rewards, Finch, Habitica and Streaks bring streaks to any habit, each with a different mix of the other mechanics.

What’s the habit tracker version of a Streak Freeze? In Habit Rewards it’s a Skip, bought with 10 coins you earned. In Finch and Streaks you can pause a streak or a task. Habitica has no equivalent.

Do streaks actually help build habits? They help you show up, which is most of it early on. The risk is the day the streak breaks: if the number was your only reason, you lose the reason too. That’s why a safety net, and a reward that doesn’t reset, matter as much as the streak.

More on why streaks break and how long a new habit takes: how long it takes to form a habit and how to gamify your life.

Habit Rewards is free on iPhone and Android. Duolingo, Finch, Habitica and Streaks are products of their own developers; we’re not affiliated with any of them.
